What Made You Buy That Car?

How many people out there are really and truly happy with the car they're driving? Hopefully lots, but I bet it's probably not as many as you'd think. Most people wouldn't actually think about it too much, and if they did, they would probably find plenty of things they don't really like about their car.

Why did you buy your current (or previous) car? Did you spend countless hours researching the marketplace by reading magazines and internet articles, draw up a shortlist of suitable models, take dozens of test drives to find the right car, and then compare prices across several dealerships to make sure you were getting the best possible deal? Did you seek advice from an impartial expert? No, didn't think so.

Or did you choose a car based on something a friend said, what your parents drive, an article you happened to read in the paper on the Tube one day, or just because you liked the look of it? Did you see an ad that matched the monthly payments you had in mind? Did you buy a newer version of the car you already had, without even questioning if it was still the best choice this time around? Did you start with good intentions of being thorough and scientific, but then get bored, tired and talked into a car that was merely acceptable but available right now?

Given that even a cheap car costs thousands of pounds to buy and run, and many cars can cost as much as a house, most people are surprisingly blasé about how they buy a car. Everyone has biases and prejudices, and these can cloud judgments when making significant purchase decisions. Many car buyers wouldn't even consider Brand X because it doesn't fit their image, but they will happily buy a completely inappropriate car from Brand Y because they like the brand image. There's nothing wrong with that, but shouldn't you at least acknowledge why you make the decisions you do?

So how confident are you that you bought the best car for your needs? And how confident are you that you got the best deal possible? Not very?

An independent car buying consultant can help you to find the right car for you out of a marketplace of thousands of new cars and hundreds of thousands of used cars. It might not be the car that that magazine said was the best, because that car's boot wouldn't fit all your stuff in. Or it might not be the brand your uncle recommended, because they don't make a car that really suits your needs. You may still decide you that don't want a car from Brand X, but at least you will be able to make an informed decision about the money you're spending.

And then you can be one of the few people who really are perfectly happy with the car they're driving.
