USA / China JLR Comparison : 2010-18

Two very different markets despite being similar in size. Over the past nine years, the USA has averaged 15.6 million sales and China 18.2 million. The US started out in this period as the bigger market for JLR but China took over. However, a sales slump in China for 2018 has the US back as the bigger market for JLR.

The data:

The USA has seen solid growth over the time with the split

China Top 50 Models : 2018 (Locally made)

If you can get a grasp of the Chinese market, you're doing better than me. It is a bewildering array of choice for the Chinese car buyer. Do people really need so many to choose from? In such a situation, I just focus on a few things and if something from that short list is appealing, the search stops there.

The Wuling Hongguang (a catchy name...not) got knocked off its perch by the Nissan

China Passenger Car Sales : 2018 (Locally made)

Geely Emgrand Boyue was the 12th best selling model

I'm not enamoured to the Chinese car market. The data doesn't include imported cars (denial doesn't make them go away) and their inclusion would swell some brands figures while adding marques not manufacturing in China to the list below.

Sales for these locally made cars were down 4.3% in 2018, perhaps the start of tougher times ahead,

USA / China JLR Comparison : 2010-16

When I decided to put the US and China together in a Jaguar Land Rover comparison, the first issue was China doesn't include imported cars in it's figures. Why on earth not? Something for another time. So I had to estimate the figures.

From 2010 to 2016 the US averaged 15 million, sales, China 18 million as best I could establish. So was there much difference? Amazingly no. Land Rover is more

Chinese Brands Struggling?

From what I understand about the Chinese car market, it is divided into two. There is the joint venture between a foreign car maker and a local company with the overseas side not able to own more than 50% of the company. They manufacture cars together almost exclusively for the local market, in more affluent areas. Then there are local companies who have gone it alone making cars, selling in the

Doing Automotive Business In China

The culture of China is very different to the West. They may be building modern cities, driving cars in ever greater numbers and using modern technologies. In other ways things are not the same. How an antitrust probe is being conducted is proof positive of that.

You would think market forces would bring car prices to a fair level but it seems not. Brand spare parts can be heavily overpriced

China & JLR

Jaguar Land Rover are entering a joint venture deal with Chinese car maker Chery. I wonder why JLR feel the need to build cars there. They are doing well as it is, unless this move guarantees access to such an important market. Below are some amazing facts about JLR in China.

JLR sales between 2004 and 2010: 39,000.
2011: 42,000. 2012: First 3 mths 18,000.
Estimated 2012: 70,000.
