UK Production : Brand Net Contribution 2017-18
Below is a chart that shows UK production by manufacturer. It then has UK passenger car sales. Finally exports in excess of sales. In other words, subtracting UK sales from production gives the export number. Then at the bottom it shows whether the UK is a net exporter or importer of passenger cars. The figures represent thousands so three zeros need to be added.

UK Production 2018 Analysis
Can UK car manufacturing get itself out of the woods? Not soon anyway
A few years ago some (remaining nameless) felt the sky was the limit for UK vehicle manufacturing. I wasn't so optimistic. CV production was ridiculously poor with no obvious way of fixing that. Nissan was the main producer and it was running at capacity. JLR was growing fast but needed more UK capacity to increase the

UK Vehicle Production / Brand - 2016 (Part 2)
This is the second part on this subject, with less words and more data. The first one can be found by clicking here. CVs are now included in the mix as well.
The UK car industry is vaunted as a success story of UK manufacturing. Seeing as most of UK's manufactured goods are imported, it only looks like a success relative to a back drop of failure. Much of the componentry is imported. The British

UK Engine Production By Manufacturer : 2015-16
The new JLR engine plant in Wolverhampton, UK
UK engine production is one of the few recent success stories in manufacturing. From the nation that brought the world the industrial revolution that is a sad indictment. Under-investment, poor labour relations, a high currency value and little loyalty from the public all played their part. It suits some manufacturers to make engines in the UK so

Geely UK Investment Electric
The London Taxi Company was acquired by Chinese car manufacturer Geely in 2012. It has just finished building a new assembly plant in Coventry, England, to produce hybrid taxis and electric powered vans. The owners sees both the hybrid taxi and electric van as a cleaner alternatives to diesel commercial vehicles, which are heavy polluters.
Carl-Peter Forster, chairman of LTC commented “The

Mature Market Vehicle Production : UK
Some great cars from Austin back in the 1960's
The UK car manufacturing industry has had had its ups and downs and ups. In the 1950's it emerged as a successful industry, went into decline in the 1970s', had a brief gain from the late 1980's, slipped a little and making a small comeback at this point. Below is what I mean.

UK Car Industry: Summary
The Land Rover Discovery Sport
The UK is running up huge trade deficits and it looks to the car industry to try rectify that. It particularly fares badly in the trade imbalance with Germany, the largest supplier of cars to Britain. Without being too scientific and detailed, I looked at the volume of production both for cars and engines, unit value per car and R&D. The results of all the top

Is Britain's Car Industry Any Good?
Off to the Frankfurt International Motor Show. Just don't tell the locals
For a country that has for years consistently imported more than it has exported, borrowing is the only thing that keeps things going. Of course, maintain that record and you end up like Greece, broke (no offence to anyone from Greece but this is where the UK is slowly heading). The UK’s deficit on trade in goods and

Car Production UK By Model : 2013
The 2014 Qashqai. In US parlance it's a home run
Car production in the UK flies under the radar for many even in it's home nation. With few local brand names to identify with, and most British too apathetic to bother finding out about it, many are unaware of it's success. That reality of that is shown in production figures, where exports account for about 80% of the total and penetration of

A Tale Of Three Sectors: UK Vehicle Manufacturing
The new Qashqai being made in Sunderland, UK.
The UK car industry has more twists in it than an intricate whodunit. The latest trends have been identified at this blog before, but April 2014 confirms it. The car making industry is going well, engine production is flat and commercial vehicle manufacturing is on life support. We can see that in the charts below, thanks to the SMMT for making

UK Net Car Importer Again In 2013
The Nissan Leaf, this one many go across the North Sea to Norway.
For many years now the UK have been a net importer of cars. Despite recent gains in local production, it cannot get near an even import/export balance by volume. If it was based on value, it would look much better, but the chart below is for numbers of cars.
How I work it out is find out how many cars were made by manufacturer

UK CV Production : 1950 - 2013
Commercial vehicles are a section of the car industry that is overlooked by most. Understandable as we drive cars. So trucks and buses are simply large road users that block our view ahead and go slower than we would like. Basically they are necessary nuisances. However, they are an essential part of society in shipping both goods and people around.
After the Second World War, UK industry

UK Net Car Importer
Most countries are 100% net car importers as they have no car manufacturing. Even some car making nations are still net importers due to the limited nature of production. The UK falls into that latter category. So by how much? Well, if you make local car sales 100%, then measure production against that you can find out. If production is half of domestic sales, then the figure is 50%. So we are

UK Vehicle Production: 2011
2011: UK car production was up 5.8%, from 1,270,000 in 2010 to 1,344,000. I was thinking it would be more, but it was and OK result. BMW's building the Countryman in Austria due to capacity restraints in the UK, and Honda reducing sales in Europe had a dampening effect. For the situation in data:
Nissan - Juke, Note & Qashqai : 480,500 / +13.5%
Land Rover - All models : 238,200 / +33%
MINI -

UK Engine Production
While UK car making has slipped over the years, its engine production has increased. In 1999, 2.1 million engines were made. 50% Ford, 13% Nissan, 11.5% MGR and 9.5% Land Rover. Since then GM, LR and MGR have all ceased UK engine production and BMW has come in. So what is the situation today (2008) in Old Blighty with regard to who makes what?
1) Ford; two plants, Dagenham, c. London, and
