Greece Passenger Car Sales : 2018

Sales up 20.4% YTD, despite a fall of 17.4% for the year but down 1.1% in December. Overall a good result but December was poor and perhaps a sign of what to expect in 2019. Total sales passed 100,000 for the first time since 2010 which was promising but still well short of the best years.

Some brands have managed to lose sales despite the increases. Mazda has pulled out for the second time

New Zealand / Greece JLR Comparison : 2010-16

This is an unusual match up, one in the south of Europe, the other in the South Pacific. However, the average registrations for the past seven years is remarkably close. NZ sales averaged just over 80,000 with JLR taking just over 1% of sales. Greece was a bit higher at 83,000 but JLR hit an abysmal 0.05%. JLR has twenty times the penetration in NZ than it does in Greece!

Greece Car Sales - Brand / 2016

Greece's economic woes are well documented so to have a fourth consecutive increase in car sales is positive. It is still a long way from the halcyon times of a decade ago, but realistically they were never sustainable anyway.

Toyota took the top spot again with Nissan and Opel bumping VW into fourth place. Fiat, Mercedes and BMW all exceeded the increase by some margin. Many did well while

Greece Top 4 Brands : 2000-13

Toyota Yaris

While Greece grew quite strongly economically from 2000 to 2007, car sales remained between 260-290,000 sales per annum. When the crisis hit in 2008 that all changed. Problems with government debt and weakness with the economy hit the nation hard as we all know. Now car sales were in free fall, only levelling off in 2012 and 2013 just under the 60,000 mark. That is a slump of

Greece Top 4 Brands : 1990-99

Toyota had a great decade in Greece

The unpredictable sales continued in Greece through the 1990's, with only Toyota and Fiat represented every year. The top four occasionally had less than a third of the sales at times, not common in car markets. Despite all the movement, only three brands held the top spot in this decade.

In 1990, 115,300 cars were sold, but in two years it was up to

Greece Top 4 Brands : 1980-89

The 1980 Datsun Sunny. The brand was dominant in 1980 Greece.

Total sales were up and down in the 1980's. From 35,700 in 1990 it went to 80,000 in 1982. Another low was 1987 with 50,500 but 1989 was up to 85,600. Brands changed places with a regularity rarely seen. Nissan was the only solid performer through the decade. Fiat started on second, fell away to 15th in '84 and back to 3rd by

Greece 1992 / 2012 Comparison

We all know about the economic woes of Europe, especially countries such as Greece. So how do car sales compare with today and twenty years ago? Let's find out.

Below is a chart of sales for 1992 and 2012 (the 2012 figures are only nine months). Despite that, the trend is clear. There is the rank brands have in the Greek market, brand and sales, finally market share:

Car Sales Greece: 2011

To say that the Greek economy is in a mess is comparably to the statement 'one legged ducks swim in circles'. It would be nice to say that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but there isn't. However, many in Greece seem to think the world won't let them collapse, and in that they may have a point. There is a fear of a domino effect.

Whatever the outcome, the car market is imploding. That
